Long-term Transplant Management

  • Long-term follow-up with a transplant physician, kidney specialist and primary care physician is mandatory.

  • Long-term communication or follow-up with the transplant center is beneficial.

  • Depending on medical issues transplant patient may have to see various specialists for heart disease, diabetes, infections, tumor and skin disorders.

  • Periodic labs (monthly or every 3 months) is necessary for all transplant patients.

  • Usual labs tests are blood counts, kidney tests, urine test, immunosuppressive drug level, liver function, cholesterol, test for Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) antibody and test for viral infection.

  • Continuation of long-term immunosuppressive medications is a must to maintain good transplant function.

  • Medical management of high Blood Pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and health screening (Prostate test for men, Mammogram and Pap smear for women, Colonoscopy for certain age group, Skin examination) and annual immunization are necessary. These should be done through patients primary care doctor or respective specialist.
